All Hands Volunteers is a nonprofit organization that provides hands-on assistance to survivors of natural disasters around the world, with maximum impact and minimum bureaucracy.

By supporting volunteers with housing, meals, tools, and organized work at no charge All Hands Volunteers is able to provide free and effective response services to communities in need. The organization’s programs are directed by the needs of each community in which it works, ensuring a timely, relevant, and culturally sensitive response.



Challenges, Innovation & Results

CHALLENGES:
All Hands Volunteers was storing data on donors and volunteers in three separate places. Without a central database to house key data, All Hands Volunteers struggled to communicate with each individual in a personalized way based on their past involvement and interactions with the organization. These challenges were magnified by the organization’s growth.
INNOVATION:
Since consolidating its donor and volunteer data into Convio Common Ground, All Hands Volunteers has created multiple fundraising and email campaigns that are customized to segments of their housefile. They test each campaign on a small group within the segment to see how the audience responds. If the response is favorable, they scale the campaign to the entire segment. The organization is also incorporating videos—usually short footage of volunteers in the field—into its various campaigns. In marketing brochures, All Hands Volunteers has added Quick Response (QR) codes. Once scanned using an individual’s smart phone, a code links to a Convio sign-up form that captures the person’s information and adds it directly into Common Ground for future prospecting, either as a donor or volunteer.
RESULTS:
  • Grew the organization’s operating budget from $0.5 million in 2009 to $2.7 million in 2011.
